We Won't Move!: Tenants Organize in New York City
A catalog that accompanies the We Won’t Move: Tenant Organizing in New York City exhibition, held at Interference Archive in 2015. Much more than a typical exhibition catalog, the publication contains photographs, flyers, posters, and images of ephemera produced by housing struggles from the 1940s to the present. An exploration of tenants taking collective action for decent and affordable housing, this book merges historical materials with charts graphic out the changes in housing ownership over 50 years as well as practical materials for renters who want to organize. It is published by Interference Archive, an all-volunteer, collectively run archive of social movement ephemera. Interference Archive explores the relationship between cultural production and social movements. This work manifests in an open stacks archival collection, publications, a study center, and public programs, all of which encourage critical and creative engagement with the rich history of social movements. They consider the use of their collection to be a way of preserving and honoring histories and material culture that is often marginalized in mainstream institutions.
